Clear Aligners Q&A

What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are removable orthodontic treatments that use patented translucent materials to straighten teeth and correct common bite issues, like overbites.

Aligners mold to the unique shape of your teeth and bite, so they blend in seamlessly with your teeth. Others can’t tell when you’re wearing them.

Clear aligners are an attractive option if you want straighter teeth but aren’t interested in traditional braces. With clear aligners, you can correct orthodontic issues discreetly, eat your favorite foods, and brush and floss as you normally would.

Which orthodontic issues can clear aligners treat?

Thanks to advancements in orthodontics, clear aligners can correct orthodontic issues just as effectively as braces in many cases. Clear aligners may be the right option for you if you have one or more of the following:

  • Misaligned teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Gapped teeth
  • Open bite
  • Crowded teeth

If you had braces as a child but your teeth ultimately shifted back into their original position, clear aligners can help restore your straightened smile.

What are the benefits of clear aligners?

When choosing between braces or clear aligners, consider the advantages of investing in Invisalign or Spark, such as:

  • Improved comfort
  • Discreet appearance
  • Removable aligners
  • Shorter treatment time
  • Better oral hygiene
  • Fewer in-office visits

Clear aligners can correct orthodontic issues in as little as 6-18 months. You can also accelerate your treatment time with the Propel® devices that ChapmanSmiles Orthodontics offers.

Unlike braces, clear aligners don’t adhere to your teeth. You can remove them to eat, drink, brush, and floss, so they have less impact on your day-to-day life than braces.

What is the difference between Spark and Invisalign clear aligners?

Spark and Invisalign are similar treatments that contain different materials. After an initial consultation, Dr. Chapman recommends the clear aligners that will suit you best.

Invisalign

Invisalign clear aligners contain BPA-free plastic that blends in with your smile using SmartTrack™ technology.

The planning process for Invisalign is entirely digital. Using an iTero® digital scanner, Dr. Chapman takes digital impressions of your mouth and stores them in the Invisalign software. He uses these impressions to create your digital treatment plan.

Invisalign creates your custom aligners and you wear a new set every two weeks as your teeth shift. To meet your targeted completion date, it’s important to wear your aligners 22 hours a day.

Spark

Spark aligners are similar to Invisalign, but they use TruGEN™ material. This proprietary material makes Spark clear aligners more comfortable, durable, and thinner than Invisalign in many cases. Spark clear aligners are also more stain resistant.

Like Invisalign, you must wear your Spark aligners at least 22 hours a day. Take them out only to eat, drink, brush, and floss.
